Sweet and Sour Pumpkin - Khatta Meetha Kaddu

This last year when I got to spend a whole lot of time with Ammi (mom), I was reintroduced to pumpkin, a vegetable I loathed in savory preparations as a child and never quite embraced into adulthood. Infact, I was amazed at the voracity with which my siblings looked forward to the lunches that involved pumpkin.

Amaranth Pea Fritters (Amaranth Vada)

We rushed through the narrow passage hunting down our seats in an attempt to get the window seat. It was for the first time we three sisters were travelling alone and we debated for a while who's going to be the odd one who had to sit with someone else. Being the eldest, I sat my younger sisters together and took to my separate seat anxiously waiting for who would come next to mine.

A huge lady walked to the seat and before she settled, I wondered if she would fit into the cramped economy class seats with barely any leg room. Would she be able to get up if I had an emergency nature's call? What if she snored? The feeble mind of a 13 year old.

Paper Thin Whole Wheat Wraps

The daily produce is laid in front of us on the ground on a wide Indian motif printed, bright and summery red square cloth. We sit on it, with our legs folded, crossed under. Perhaps a posture only Indians can relate to as relaxed.  We teasingly argue about who gets which task to perform. The herbs have to be washed and dried, the cluster beans deveined, the stem plucked of the green chilies and the most sought after task - peel and cube the mangoes, so that one would enjoy sucking the last remaining flesh off the seeds after it's all done. It's messy, but none of the vivid mustard color flesh can go to waste, the king of fruits deserves that respect.

Beetroot with Mutton - Chukhandar Gosht

IMG_7402

Growing up I only remember occasional traces of shredded beetroot in our salads, often overshadowed by many other ingredients, such that I could barely remember their taste. In my own kitchen, I often bought beetroot because 'I need to eat healthy stuff', but not until recently have I started appreciating it. My favorite juice these days is beetroot juice, that says something.

Lemony Coconut Milk and Sweet Corn Soup

I was fifteen or may be sixteen, when I realized I could live ten days straight just on chicken soup. In a desperate attempt to lose couple of pounds I declared a ten day soup diet. Of course, in my not so well developed mind of fifteen, soups meant chicken soups, nothing more and nothing less.

Mung Dal With Fenugreek Leaves

M can pretty much eat anything that's presented in a snack form. When I learned this, I started stuffing his hate foods into invisible pockets of puff pastry, in sandwiches and meatballs. Like you might know by now, I have an obsession about such things. When I have my obsession under control, I also serve his love food such as lentils as snacks.

Cold Lentil Yogurt Soup

Cold Lentil Yogurt Soup

A few years ago, a fine summer day M wanted Sarki. Now, I could barely remember what a Sarki was.  I was pretty sure the blame has to go on my mom, who most probably never made it at home.

Chana Bhatura - A Guest Post by Nisha of Look Who's Cooking Too

IMG_1857

I like people who are honest. That's what's initially drew me towards Look Who's Cooking Too written by my lovely friend Nisha. Every time I'm at her blog, I want to leave a comment saying 'Oh that's my life story'. Apart from the fact that I relate so much with her and that she is honest and funny, her blog is  filled with great Indian recipes and I have so many of them bookmarked.

Dum Aloo - Potatoes steamed in spices and yogurt

Two things that are always on demand for lunch at my office is biryani and dum aloo. Its less to do with my culinary skills than it is about the universal love for potatoes.

Apple Rabri/Rabdi and a Guest Post

The lovely Leemei from My Cooking Hut invited to do a guest post for her. How can I turn that down? She has a beautiful blog with great collection of Asian and French recipes. Not only that she is a fabulous photographer as well and I often seek inspiration from her blog. I was delighted when she requested an Indian sweet recipe, because there is always room for dessert isn't it?

Zeera Chawal - Cumin Rice

It never ceases to surprise me how different I and M-the husband are.We just can't say, do or act similarly in any given situation. Sure, we are born and bought up in different countries, quiet different "kind" of families, different food but even as people we are different species.
