In this week, Eid Al Adha will be celebrated by Muslims all over the world, to comommerate Ibrahim's devotion to God and his willingness to sacrifice his own son when God commanded. But just before he was to do so God replaced his son with a ram, and revealed to Ibrahim that his sacrifice has already been accepted.
In this Muslim month of Dhu al-Hijjah, Muslims from around the world gather in Mecca for a pilgrimage called the Hajj. Among many rituals during Hajj, the pilgrims in Mecca sacrifice a sheep to remember Ibrahim's trials. Muslims who can afford to also join the celebrations by sacrificing an animal such as goat, sheep or camel. The meat is then distributed among friends, family, relatives, neighbors and the poor.
Needless to say, the entire week is a glutonious heaven, from meat kebabs, to stews to biryani's, korma and kofte. But because every celebration calls for something sweet, a lot of desserts make it to the table to.
These date truffles remind me of sticky date pudding, but just in truffle form. Its simple to make but makes such a great impression. You could play around with what you dust them with, coconut, pistachio, other nuts whatever you fancy. But if sugar free wasn't your priority, try it with coated with oreo crumbs. Yes, oreo crumbs!
Wishing everyone who celebrates a very Happy Eid!
Chocolate Cinnamon Date Truffles (Sugar Free)
Ingredients
750 g dates
1/2 stick (50g) butter
1 tsp cinnamon powder
2 tbsp cocoa powder
For dusting
crushed pistachio
cocoa powder
shredded coconut
oreo crumbs
Method
Heat butter in a pan till melted and add the dates. Let the dates cook with the butter till its pulpy and sticky. Swtich off the gas, and mix in the spices and cocoa powder. Keep aside to cool.
Once cool, use your hands to remove the seeds and roll the mixture into 1 inch balls.
Roll them in the filling of choice before serving.
These truffles look good. Recently I tried my hands at making truffle and the ganache ended up lightly thin. Do you think adding more chocolate would help?

ReplyDeleteBelated Eid Mubarak! I love this post.. great story to accompany the desserts. I didn't even realize these were mainly dates! The rich color looks so much like a very dark chocolate. I can just imagine how great the flavor combo would be - dates, pista, and chocolate. Mmm. We had a friend come back from Umrah with chocolate covered that were stuffed with nuts. Best. Thing. Ever. I imagine these would taste just like that.. but in convenient truffle form :) Will need to try these out soon.
